What is the difference between different powers of air compressor?

2 Stage Screw Air Compressor with Axial Fan

When purchasing an air compressor, or when you have a certain understanding of air compressors, you may come across a concept, which is the power of the air compressor. In the air compressor manufacturer’s brochure or quotation, the power of the same type of air compressor will range from 7.5KW to 315KW, and have different sizes and exhaust volumes. Power is also one of the three major parameters for air compressor selection. So, what is the difference between different powers of air compressors? What is the relationship between power, exhaust pressure and exhaust volume?

  1. Power, exhaust volume and exhaust pressure

First of all, a misunderstanding that everyone must understand is that although the exhaust volume and power of an air compressor are positively correlated, the exhaust pressure is not. The exhaust pressure of the same type of air compressor is basically fixed, usually 0.8Mpa or 1Mpa. The higher the power, it means that an air compressor can discharge more compressed air at rated pressure within a period of time. This is the difference between different powers of air compressors.

  1. Common power

The air compressor power that general air compressor manufacturers can produce, taking screw air compressors as an example, is 7.5KW to 315KW. The air compressor power in this range can basically meet most factory production needs. If you need an air compressor below 7.5KW, it is generally not an air compressor, but another machine we often talk about, an air pump, or a scroll air compressor. If an air compressor with a power higher than 315KW is required, it is difficult to achieve a screw air compressor due to limitations in technical principles. Air compressors that can achieve ultra-high power are generally air compressors based on the centrifugal principle.

  1. How to choose the power you need

So how do you choose the power you need? First of all, you must determine the air pressure and air volume required for production. In order to ensure that the actual air consumption is sufficient, you must choose a machine with a slightly higher exhaust volume than the required air volume. It is worth noting that the price and performance of different types of air compressors will be different. Therefore, when choosing an air compressor, you need to consider more than just the three factors of exhaust volume, exhaust pressure and power.
