Is the more lubricating oil the better for screw compressors?

For oil-injected screw air compressors, lubricating oil plays the role of lubricating the main engine rotor, reducing air leakage, and ensuring exhaust volume. If the lubrication amount is insufficient during the operation of the air compressor, insufficient gas production may occur and the main engine may become stuck. Questions like death, then, is the more lubricant the better? Obviously not.

The amount of oil injected is usually determined by the heat balance calculation of the compressor, assuming that the discharge temperature is equal to the discharge oil temperature. In addition, the lubrication of bearings and speed-increasing gears (if any) should also be considered. In particular, different gas media, different pressure ratios, flow sizes, speeds, etc. will affect the design of the fuel injection volume.

For example, the gas with high compression ratio is dense, can take away more heat, and requires less lubricating oil; the volume efficiency of air compressors with small volume flow is relatively low, and it is necessary to improve lubricating oil circulation and strengthen sealing; high-speed leakage of air compressors is relatively Smaller, but it interferes with the increase in fuel consumption and requires reducing the amount of fuel injection.

 

In short, determining the circulation of lubricating oil is a complex calculation and experimental process. While ensuring that the exhaust temperature does not exceed the standard and all components of the machine head are fully lubricated, the amount of lubricating oil injected can be reduced to ensure the service life of the oil and test the design capabilities of the screw air compressor factory.

Looking at today’s screw air compressor market, few people actually design the fuel injection volume accurately through calculations and experiments. In actual projects, air compressor manufacturers generally design based on the specifications provided by the OEM or the fuel injection parameters in the parameter table. “It’s better to have more than less” is the choice of too many complete machine manufacturers with little design capabilities.
